Gov. Brian Kemp commended the United Way of Greater Atlanta and Gwinnett County for creating HomeFirst Gwinnett, a women and children's homeless shelter in Norcross.

The county invested more than $2.6 million to fund HomeFirst Gwinnett, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

"Thankful to @unitedwayatl and @HomeFirstGwinn for their work to end homelessness and support women & children," Kemp said in a Tweet.

The Gwinnett County-based shelter assists women and children with job opportunities, health care, and permanent housing. The homeless initiative will serve as the first of its kind in Georgia to admit women and children within 60 days of applying for housing, the AJC reported.

With an average yearly spending rate of $700,000, the organization provides housing support for vulnerable individuals, the AJC reported.

"In the past year, together we've helped more than 14,000 people across Greater Atlanta avoid homelessness and remain in stable housing," the United Way said in a Tweet.

The county has 68,000 children that live in areas of low or very low child well-being, Dan Kaufman, president and CEO of the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce,

The Norcross location experienced delays resulting from the pandemic before being able to fully accommodate itself, Matt Elder, the organization's director, told the AJC. To abide by social distancing regulations, it currently only holds 20 beds and enough space for three families, allowing a 90-day stay per family.
