Global Atlanta, in collaboration with the Gwinnett Chamber and Partnership Gwinnett, recently held a Consular Conversations event at the Gwinnett Chamber. The event was well-attended, drawing nearly 100 guests who participated in a dialogue featuring Shri Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan, the Consul General of India in Atlanta, and Trevor Williams, Managing Editor of Global Atlanta. The program included a moderated Q&A session with the audience.

Sponsored by Miller & Martin, this edition of Consular Conversations provided insights into India’s diplomatic goals and its increasing interaction with the Southeastern United States. Consul General Lakshmanan, a diplomat since 2005, discussed his experiences in enhancing India-U.S. relations within Georgia’s growing international business environment.

The focus of the consulate on trade, tourism, and technology was emphasized by the Consul General. Now marking its 13th year in service to Atlanta and the Southeast region, the Indian Consulate has been pivotal in strengthening bilateral relations. Over five years, trade between India and the U.S. has increased by 20%.

Indian companies have significantly contributed to Georgia’s economy through investments that drive job creation statewide. Georgia hosts 19 Indian companies—the highest number in any Southern U.S. state—with most investments concentrated in information technology.

The Indian-American community plays an essential role in shaping Georgia’s demographic landscape. In Gwinnett County alone, Indian-Americans make up a considerable portion of the Asian population, which represented 13.22% of residents as of 2020.

This event highlighted both the dynamic influence of the Indian community within Georgia and ongoing efforts to deepen ties through continued engagement between Indian diplomats and local leaders.
