The Gwinnett Chamber recently hosted the “On Topic: State of Rowen” event, drawing nearly 200 community and business leaders to discuss the future of the Rowen development. This sold-out event, presented by Porter Steel, focused on Rowen’s long-term vision, progress, and strategy in environment, agriculture, and medicine.
The panel featured Brian Brodrick from Jackson Spalding as moderator, with Mason Ailstock of the Rowen Foundation, Rebecca Alexander from Gwinnett Technical College, Kelley Balkcom of Georgia Power, and Bob Hughes from HGOR contributing insights. They highlighted their partnership with Gwinnett County to complete Rowen’s $32 million infrastructure phase called “complete streets.” This initiative includes new roads, pedestrian paths, and green spaces—part of Georgia’s first green roads project aimed at reducing heat island effects through innovative design.
Mason Ailstock described Rowen as a “knowledge community” due to its proximity to over 50 colleges and universities within an hour’s drive. This strategic location supports research partnerships and workforce development in fields like agriculture, medicine, environmental science, sensor technologies, and drug development.
A site selection study conducted in 2025 pointed out energy availability, labor force quality, and land availability as key factors for companies considering relocation or expansion. With robust energy infrastructure and a skilled regional workforce at its master-planned site covering 2,000 acres intended for phased development into research space among others—Rowen is positioned as an attractive destination for enterprises focused on innovation.
Rowen has also initiated a “Living Labs” program through collaborations with the University System of Georgia and the Technical College System of Georgia. This initiative aims to create academic programs addressing workforce needs in emerging sectors such as electric mobility while exploring advancements in autonomous mobility through partnerships like those with the Georgia Network for Electric Mobility.
Leading this public-private partnership is the Rowen Foundation which outlines a long-term economic strategy expected to generate significant impact—supporting up to 100 thousand jobs upon completion—and contributing $10 billion annually economically across Georgia particularly benefiting areas experiencing substantial population growth like Gwinnett County along with neighboring counties projected collectively accounting for nearly half of statewide demographic increases by mid-century.
