More than 1.7 million students attended Georgia public schools, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Elementary grades recorded the largest share with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by 388,733 in middle school (22.7%) and 539,092 in high school (31.4%).
Chronic absenteeism continues to be a significant problem in Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. In response, GaDOE introduced a statewide initiative that features a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness push, and targeted support for districts with higher needs to improve attendance rates.
In 2025, Georgia lawmakers revised school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion exclusively for absenteeism. The new law also requires additional reporting and supports alternate diploma pathways.
By 2026, Georgia’s student-to-teacher ratio averaged about 14:1, which is better than the national average of 15:1.
