Georgia public schools saw enrollment above 1.7 million, according to the Georgia Department of Education’s Fiscal Year 2026-1 report. Elementary grades led with 787,206 students (45.9%), followed by 388,733 in middle schools (22.7%) and 539,092 in high schools (31.4%).
Post-pandemic, chronic absenteeism has become a significant challenge in Georgia, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of school days in 2024, the Georgia Department of Education reported. In response, GaDOE unveiled a statewide strategy featuring a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness campaign and targeted assistance for the highest-need districts to help raise daily attendance rates.
In 2025, Georgia revised its attendance laws to prevent expulsions solely due to absenteeism. The law also mandates additional reporting and enhances programs that offer alternative diploma pathways for students.
By 2026, Georgia’s average student-teacher ratio stood at approximately 14:1, an improvement over the national average of 15:1.
