Atlanta Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies hit a home run in the fifth inning of a 9-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sept. 22 to join the 30-HR, 100-RBI club.
The two-time All-Star, who has been with the Braves since 2017, became the first second baseman to achieve the feat since fellow Curaçao native Jonathan Schoop did so for the Orioles four years ago, a report on MLB.com said.
"What an accomplishment," Braves manager Brian Snitker said in the report. "Kind of in the story, history of the Atlanta Braves, to be the first guy to do that is pretty cool. That is really neat."
Since Albies’s milestone, which occurred during Atlanta’s four-game winning streak, the Braves (84-72 as of Sept. 28) have gone 3-2.
Their 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sept. 28 placed their magic number to clinch another NL East crown at three.
MLB.com reported that Albies is the first Braves second baseman to record a 30-homer, 100-RBI season.
Albies was a member of the Braves’ previous division championship teams and will likely see the fourth one clinched in a matter of days.
He is currently batting .258 in 2021, with his overall career batting average being .273.
