While temperatures drastically increased before Christmas, Fox News 5 reported that several warming centers were open as temperatures in the Atlanta area reached or neared freezing.
“Temperatures overnight Tuesday into Wednesday are expected to dip to at or near freezing,” a Dec. 20 report by Fox 5 said, referring to forecasts by the Fox 5 Storm Team.
In Atlanta, there was a warming center open at the Old Adamsville Recreation Center at 3404 Delmar Lane between 8 p.m. Monday and 7 a.m. Tuesday. There was transportation available from the Gateway Center.
DeKalb County had fire stations 3 through 6 open as warming centers on Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Gwinnett County warming stations were open from Monday at 6 p.m. to Tuesday at 7 a.m. The requirement was for temperatures to be 35 degrees or lower so people could get a meal and warm up. The five Gwinnett County locations included Best Friend Park Gym, Buford Senior Center, Centerville Senior Center, Lawrenceville Senior Center and Shorty Howell Park Activity Building.
Weather in Atlanta later shifted and the forecast showed temperatures in the 60s and 70s until Jan. 1. However, temperatures could fall overnight this week with Jan. 7 showing a forecasted low of 27 degrees overnight, according to NOAA.gov.
