The Atlanta Falcons have named St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School's girls flag football coach Zach Corcoran as their 2021 high school coach of the year, marking the first time in history that a girls flag football coach has been nominated for the Don Shula NFL high school coach of the year award.
"Meet your 2021 Atlanta Falcons Coach of the Year … Zach Corcoran of St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School," team posted on Twitter.
The Atlanta Falcons' organization has long been a major supporter in promoting girls' flag football across the state, The Falcoholic reported. This marks a huge step in bridging the gender gap in high school sports.
The Falcons are the first team to ever win the Don Shula award consecutively, having chosen the winners in 2019 and 2020. If Corcoran wins the overall award, it would mean a huge advancement for the development of flag football in the state of Georgia and also mark a historic moment for the Falcons, The Falcoholic reported.
The Falcons fully funded the Georgia's girls flag football pilot program, which involved all 19 Gwinnett County high schools, The Falcoholic reported. During its first season, Corcoran led his team, the Lady Vikings, to win a regional championship and boast a 6-3-1 record.
