The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has accused 34-year-old James Edward Perkins of being the triggerman in the shooting of a Gwinnett County deputy.

Investigators allege that after stealing an SUV and leading authorities on a chase, Perkins shot the deputy; a recent FOX 5 Atlanta report said.

Police were called to a Lawrenceville Goodwill facility and found a stolen vehicle with Perkins behind the wheel, the FOX 5 report said. Perkins then drove the vehicle away to the Anzio Apartments located on the 3100 block of Sweetwater Road near Old Norcross Road just west of Lawrenceville.

As a deputy approached the SUV, the GBI alleged that Perkins fired shots, leaving the deputy with non-life-threatening injuries; the report said. The deputy was part of a K-9 unit; the K-9 was unharmed.

Other officers fired and hit Perkins, the report said. It is unclear how many times the suspect was hit.

Perkins was arrested by Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT and is currently in critical condition at Northside Hospital Gwinnett, officials said in the FOX 5 report.
