Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) is pushing for the state to provide grants to school districts to help students catch up on what they may have missed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and to facilitate changes in the classroom, according to a Sept. 12 report by Fox 5 Atlanta.
“We have more work to do to address pandemic learning loss, bring more educators and counselors into our schools, and keep our students and staff safe," Kemp said at Dove Creek Elementary School in Statham, Fox 5 reported.
Kemp also said he will seek to enhance school safety by passing a law requiring “intruder alert drills.”
According to the report, Kemp’s plan consists of numerous proposals that are major components in his second-term reelection strategy, which he recently unveiled at an elementary school in Oconee County where his daughter worked as a schoolteacher last year, according to Fox 5.
As a candidate in 2018, Kemp made a $5,000 pay raise for teachers a centerpiece of his agenda and earlier this year delivered on the final allotment of those funds, Fox 5 reported. However, Kemp has not proposed a pay raise for teachers as part of his second-term agenda.
