Family members of three men recently killed while behind bars at the Gwinnett County Jail were among those recently staging a protest outside the facility, demanding answers and better questions, according to a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta.
The three victims to have died while in custody have been identified as Corey Bryant, Deion Strayhorn and Ian Longshore.
"They are human beings," said Penny Poole, the president of the Gwinnett County NAACP. "They are someone’s son, someone’s brother."
In a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta, Longshore’s mom, Kimberly, insisted she and her family have made several phone calls to no avail.
"They have told me absolutely nothing,” Longshore told FOX 5 Atlanta.
Longshore said other inmates told her son reached for a panic button before he collapsed, but no one went to his aid to assist him until the next morning during roll call, with an initial sheriff’s office report claiming that guard’s found an unknown white powder in his cell, FOX 5 reports.
According to the report, beyond their three deaths, protesters say they want reform and improvements in conditions for those awaiting trial, who are innocent until proven guilty, while deputies assured them the investigations in question are now in the hands of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
