* SPC has outlined north and central Georgia in a Day 1 Enhanced Risk for Friday to account for impacts expected from the line of storms on Friday.

* A High Wind Warning has been issued to account for wind gusts up to 50 mph in far northwest and far north central Georgia outside of the line of storms.

Overview

A strong to severe line of storms associated with a cold frontal passage is expected to impact north and central Georgia Friday afternoon into Friday evening. The line is expected to reach extreme northwest Georgia as early as 1 PM today and then reach metro Atlanta from 3 PM - 7 PM EST, and then central Georgia from 8 PM - 11 PM EST.  A High Wind Warning has been issued from 7 AM - 11 PM EST for  far northwest and far north central Georgia to account for the elevated wind gusts (40-50 mph) before the main line that could bring down numerous trees and powerlines before the line makes it across Georgia.  A Wind Advisory also remains in effect from 7 AM - 11 PM EST for the remainder of north and central Georgia to account for wind gusts up to 35-45 mph.

Main Points

  • A line of storms is expected to move through Friday afternoon into the evening.
    1. This has led to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) outlining portions far northwest GA in an Enhanced Risk (3 on a scale of 0-5) and portions of northeast and central GA in a Sight Risk (2 on a scale of 0-5) .
    2. Those in north and central Georgia should be alert as everyone is likely to see impacts no matter what risk you are under. 
  • There is high confidence that north and central Georgia will see impacts related to the line of storms. The primary impacts expected are: 
    1. Damaging wind gusts (up to 70 mph)  
      • potential to bring down trees and powerlines.
    2. Isolated tornadoes which could be strong
    3. Frequent lightning
    4. Locally heavy rainfall 
      • potential to lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas or areas with poor drainage
  • A High Wind Warning has been issued to account for high wind gusts, prior to the line of storms in far northwest and far north central Georgia. 
    1. Wind gusts up to 50 mphare expected before the storms arrive 
      • Higher wind gusts could bring down trees and powerlines
  • A Wind Advisory remains in effect for the remainder of north and central Georgia to account for high wind gusts, prior to the line of storms. 
    1. Wind gusts up to 35-45 mphare expected before the storms arrive 
      • Higher wind gusts could bring down trees and powerlines
