The City of Sugar Hill is hosting a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Gold Mine Park on Monday, March 20, 2023, from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Located at 440 Level Creek Rd., Gold Mine Park is a 9.2-acre trailhead part of the planned 16.5-mile Sugar Hill Greenway. At the Gold Mine Park ribbon-cutting ceremony, community groups will come together to bring gold panning, Sugar Hill gold mining oral history, rock paintings and other stations for guests to enjoy Sugar Hill’s newest park.
“This event will be an excellent opportunity to come together with friends and neighbors and celebrate this big community milestone. Gold Mine Park not only provides new community greenspace and access to the Sugar Hill Greenway, but it also uniquely showcases one of our historically unique points of interest,” said Council Member Mason Roszel. “Sugar Hill’s gold mining history will be on full display at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Community members will have the opportunity to view the inactive gold mine, learn about Sugar Hill’s gold mining past and interact with members of Mayor & Council, and many community groups. Kids will be able to mine for gems of their own and get out and explore the new park and greenway!”
The Gold Mine Park ribbon-cutting ceremony is also marking the completion of five miles of Greenway trails. Starting from mile marker zero at Cornerstone Park on West Broad St., the community can now use the trail all the way to Whitehead Rd.
Public Parking will be available at Gwinnett Church (300 Peachtree Industrial Blvd, Sugar Hill, GA 30518).
- Enter the Level Creek Rd. entrance to Gwinnett Church and park in the back parking lot. This is approximately a 5-minute walk.
- Using the Level Creek Rd. entrance to Gwinnett Church, go past the open gate into the ‘Dacula’ lot. Here you will find a ten-foot-long unpaved path from Gwinnett Church’s parking lot onto the Greenway. From this point to Gold Mine Park along the trail is approximately a 10-minute walk on the trail.
Gold Mine Park features an overlook of Simmons Mine, an inactive mine from the 1800s through the early 1900s. Gold mining holds a strong influence today in Sugar Hill with many streets in the city being named after gold mining families. To learn more about Sugar Hill gold mining history, visit the Sugar Hill History Museum located at 5010 West Broad St.
