House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration and Senator Clint Dixon have confirmed the withdrawal of plans for a 700-unit apartment complex in Gwinnett's Hamilton Mill area. This decision follows their opposition to the project, which was based on concerns about overcrowding and traffic congestion. The decision is in line with the views expressed by various community groups and nearby residents who were apprehensive about the potential impact of the development.
According to a press release by the Georgia General Assembly, Efstration said: "I’m proud of the work by so many constituents and local community groups who fought this irresponsible attempt to build 700 apartments in an area of Gwinnett that is already suffering from overcrowding and traffic congestion."
In response to the news, Dixon was quoted in another press release by the Georgia General Assembly saying: "Today’s decision by private developers to withdraw their plans for an ill-conceived 700 unit apartment complex on Sardis Church Road is a strong step in the right direction."
A WSB-TV report from early October outlined that the plan aimed to construct 700 apartment homes and introduce retail space near Seckinger High School. Developers from Brand Properties intended to acquire 40 acres for this project, which encountered resistance from neighbors and community members. An online petition opposing the project garnered nearly 2,000 signatures.
The Georgia General Assembly press release also notes that Efstration represents District 104, which spans parts of Barrow and Gwinnett counties. Elected to the House in 2013, he currently serves as House Majority Leader and holds positions on various committees.
