ATLANTA – House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration (R-Auburn) and State Senator Clint Dixon (R-Gwinnett) celebrated the bipartisan vote by the House on Senate Bill 333, a legislation aimed at establishing the City of Mulberry in northeastern Gwinnett County. Upon Governor Kemp's signature, SB 333 will present the question of cityhood to the residents in the upcoming spring primary ballot.
"I am thankful to both my Democrat and Republican colleagues who voted in favor of this legislation in today’s vote, which would create the City of Mulberry without implementing any city property taxes," expressed Majority Leader Efstration. "As a resident of the proposed city, I look forward to voting in favor of granting my neighbors local control over planning and zoning in the May 21st primary."
Sen. Dixon also commended Leader Efstration's unwavering efforts in advancing the legislation in the House. "Out of control growth and traffic congestion are real problems in northeastern Gwinnett, and today’s vote sent an important message that the Georgia legislature stands with my local community. I look forward to seeing this issue on the ballot in May."
The next step for Senate Bill 333 is the governor's signature. Should it receive his approval and be endorsed by the voters, the City of Mulberry would provide essential services such as planning and zoning, code enforcement, and stormwater management. Importantly, the city would not have the authority to impose a city property tax.
The City of Mulberry has been deemed financially viable without resorting to collecting any city property taxes, as stated in the feasibility study available at https://www.cityofmulberryga.com/.
