ATLANTA (Mar. 8, 2024) — Sen. Nabilah Islam Parkes (D—Lawrenceville), Georgia’s youngest-serving female Senator, achieved a significant legislative milestone with the successful passage of Senate Bill 144 through the Georgia General Assembly. SB 144, the first bill under Sen. Islam Parkes’ leadership to pass both legislative chambers, focuses on enhancing military processes in the state.

The bill aims to streamline operations by removing certain reporting requirements for the Adjutant General, as explained by Sen. Islam Parkes, who emphasized the importance of protecting the identities of officers and their families from potential threats. Additionally, the legislation eliminates the need for printing and distributing physical copies of laws and regulations to militia forces, citing the accessibility of information online and the unnecessary cost to taxpayers.

In response to the passage of SB 144, Sen. Islam Parkes expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “This meaningful legislation will reduce administrative burdens, save taxpayers and protect our commissioned officers.” She also highlighted her close collaboration with members of the Georgia Militia and veterans, attributing her insights to her role on the Senate Committee on Veterans, Military and Homeland Security.

Looking towards the future, Sen. Islam Parkes affirmed her commitment to serving the community and driving positive change in Georgia through legislative efforts. She shared, “I am eager to continue working on new legislation in the future, addressing the needs of our communities and striving for positive change in Georgia.”

Sen. Nabilah Islam Parkes represents the 7th Senate District, including a portion of Gwinnett County, and can be contacted for further information at 404.463.5263 or NabilahIslamParkes@senate.ga.gov.
