A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the Gwinnett County Board of Education Retirement System on September 20, 2024. The request, made by North Gwinnett News, a media organization dedicated to comprehensive and accurate coverage of local governmental affairs, sought detailed information about the pension fund's active and retired employees for the year 2023.
In line with Georgia's Open Records Act § 50.18.70 et seq., we asked for an electronic format list detailing specific data fields for all active and retired employees in the organization's pension fund for the year 2023. The requested data fields include last name, first name, middle name, date of birth, employer name, employment start date, employment end date, salary, compensation type, amount, year, process date, last disbursement amount, disbursement frequency and the contribution amount for 2023.
As a media organization committed to public service journalism, we believe that access to public records is vital in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information to the public at large as a news outlet, we have also requested a fee waiver as part of this FOIA request.
We continue to await a response from the Gwinnett County Board of Education Retirement System regarding this matter.
