Mahalia J. Saavedra, a student from the Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST), has been chosen to participate in the Student Enhancement in Earth and Space Science (SEES) summer internship. This program is hosted by The University of Texas at Austin’s Center for Space Research (UT/CSR) and funded by NASA.

Saavedra expressed her enthusiasm about the opportunity: “I see the NASA SEES program as a pivotal milestone on my academic and professional journey,” she said. “As someone who aspires to be an experimental physicist, this opportunity allows me to engage in my first real-world project tailored for an active aerospace mission. Through this internship, I'll take a significant step toward actualizing my dream of advancing the frontiers of experimental acoustic or quantum physics.”

The SEES program is a collaboration between UT/CSR and NASA aimed at enhancing STEM education through practical experiences in earth and space science. Over 500 students applied for 50 available on-site positions. Those selected will initially work remotely with project scientists, complete relevant coursework, learn Python coding, and conduct microgravity research before attending the on-site portion.

During their time on-site, interns will partake in hands-on activities and field investigations while collaborating with NASA-funded scientists and engineers at UT/CSR. They will also have opportunities to tour facilities, network with peers, and contribute to ongoing NASA missions.

The SEES internship underscores the significance of engaging students in STEM fields by providing them with unique opportunities to work alongside professionals involved in space exploration.
