Exceptional Children's Week, observed from April 14 to 17, highlights the unique qualities of every child. The Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) district is committed to fostering an environment of acceptance and support, ensuring all children feel valued and empowered.

Minor Elementary School's Pre-K Deaf/Hard of Hearing Total Communication Class prioritizes equitable learning experiences. The class supports communication through various modalities including American Sign Language, sign-supported speech, Listening and Spoken Language, Picture Communication, and Assistive Technology. The curriculum is designed to provide D/HH children with access to language opportunities akin to their peers. The team includes two Speech Therapists and an Occupational Therapist who collaborate throughout the year.

Leila Caughran, an Early Childhood Special Education teacher for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students, states: “We are lucky to have a Deaf adult in our classroom as a language model and a fabulous team who is willing to try anything.”

Oakland Meadow School serves special education students across all clusters within the district. Principal Amy Lazic emphasizes the school's dedication: “At Oakland Meadow School, our exceptional students are the very reason our school exists... We are committed to providing an exceptional day of learning to each and every student that we serve every day!”

Throughout the week, schools across GCPS participate in Special Olympics activities and events. The community is encouraged to support student-athletes and volunteers.

As Exceptional Children's Week is celebrated, GCPS reaffirms its commitment to providing support, resources, and encouragement necessary for student success. Special education services are available for students aged 3-21 within the district. More information can be found through GCPS’ Department of Special Education and Psychological Services.
