Gwinnett County students advance to national leadership competition

Nearly 30 students from Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) have qualified for the 2024 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference (NLSC). These students secured their spots by placing first or second in the SkillsUSA State Leadership Conference. SkillsUSA is a collaboration of students, teachers, and industry representatives aiming to ensure a skilled workforce in America.

The national event will be held from June 24-28 in Atlanta, Georgia. It will bring together thousands of participants, including students, instructors, business partners, and administrators. More than 6,500 students are expected to compete in 115 different competitions throughout the week.

Students from Grayson Technical Education Program who qualified include Laura Call Gomez and Genesis Mickens for Music Video Production under advisors Andre DeRamus and Allison Falch respectively. Michael Perez placed first in Information Technology Services with Wendy Dyer as his advisor. Amaya Decaille also worked with Wendy Dyer to secure second place in Technical Computer Applications. Andrew Miller and Jeremy Seber achieved second place in Cybersecurity under Anthony Edwards' guidance.

From Maxwell High School of Technology, Ekaterina Gaidachuk and Alyssa Thai won first place in 3D Visualization & Animation with Mark James as their advisor. Hans Alexis, Emanuel Jordan, and Graham Sanford excelled in Automated Manufacturing under Brandon Myers' mentorship. Shaina Vang won first place in Baking and Pastry Arts advised by Belinda Delvasto.

Other notable winners include Rico Allen for CNC 2-Axis Turning Programmer; Hayden Glaser for CNC 3-Axis Milling Programmer; Jason Mendoza-Blanco for CNC Programmer; Deysi Sandoval, Alexis Tiborczszeghi, Connor Touchton for Career Pathways Showcase - Industrial & Engineering Technology; Gabriel Valenzuela for Collision Damage Appraisal; Jaretzy Lugarda-Ramirez for Cosmetology; Lucas Costea for Electronics Technology; Anita Yasini for Job Skill Demonstration Open—all advised by respective mentors at Maxwell High School of Technology.

Sara Caccamo Fuenmayor placed second in Architectural Drafting under Dee Tillman’s guidance while Daniel Jin secured second place in Automotive Electronics/Ignition with Ervin Cruz as his advisor. Oscar Marquez took second place in Collision Damage Appraisal working with Fernando De La Cruz while Carter Johnson achieved second place in HVACR guided by Michael Mahaffey.
