Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) recently held its 26th annual banquet to recognize and thank the transportation staff responsible for safely transporting over 130,000 students. The district honored 49 transportation professionals for their dedication and outstanding performance.

Laura Howell and Monica Mau were named GCPS’ 2023-24 School Bus Managers of the Year. Stacy Welch received the title of 2023-24 School Bus Monitor of the Year, while Ronnie Alston was recognized as the 2023-24 Fleet Technician of the Year.

Monica Mau, a bus driver in the Norcross Cluster for four years, shared her enjoyment of working with children. She recounted a memorable moment with an elementary student who politely declined to "snitch" on noisy peers, which brought laughter to her day.

Laura Howell has served as a bus manager for six years in the Brookwood and Grayson Clusters. She cherishes moments that bring smiles to children's faces and values community efforts like helping a student obtain his school letter jacket through fundraising.

Stacy Welch has worked with special needs students in the Norcross Cluster for two years. Her most memorable experience involved witnessing a nonverbal student say goodbye to his mother for the first time, an event that moved both Welch and the student's mother.

Ronnie Alston's recognition as Fleet Technician of the Year highlights his commitment to maintaining safe school buses. GCPS Transportation Support Manager Carla Hart emphasized Alston's personal connection to his work, noting that his own children are part of GCPS, adding significance to his role.

Charley Humble, GCPS executive director of Transportation, expressed gratitude towards all honorees for their exceptional service. “We sincerely thank our bus managers, monitors, and fleet technicians for their dedication to our students and their safety,” Humble stated. He acknowledged their profound impact on students' lives through daily interactions.

The winners were chosen after a thorough selection process involving nominations from colleagues across various zones within GCPS. Finalists underwent written and driving skills tests before being evaluated by a judging committee that selected this year's awardees.
