Karen Mulzac Watkins Vice Chair, District I | Gwinnett County Public Schools
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is set to observe National School Psychology Week from November 11 to 15. This year's theme, "Spark Discovery," emphasizes the essential role of school psychologists in fostering new ideas, driving change, and broadening opportunities for children and youth.
Dr. Nicole White, Executive Director of Special Education and Psychological Services at GCPS, stated, "School psychologists provide unparalleled support to our students, staff members, and learning communities." She added that their role aligns with the district's focus on empathy and equity by offering consultation and direct support within local schools.
The district employs around 70 school psychologists who assist students from Pre-K through 12th grade. These professionals work across all GCPS schools, collaborating with teachers and families as part of multidisciplinary teams like Student Support Teams. They also participate in special education meetings, assess students for special education eligibility, offer crisis support to students, and consult on academic and behavioral interventions.
For more information about the services provided by these professionals, individuals are encouraged to visit the district’s Special Education and Psychological Services webpage.
