Since 2008, the Gwinnett HEAT program has been providing an inclusive environment for students with physical impairments to participate as student-athletes. The initiative was established after a presentation by the American Association of Adapted Sports Programs and aims to offer sports opportunities for students with physical disabilities who do not qualify for the Special Olympics or traditional sports.

The program includes three adapted sports throughout the year: wheelchair handball in the fall, wheelchair basketball in the winter, and wheelchair football in the spring. Each sport features a six-game season culminating in a state tournament. Mike Phillips, GCPS Adapted Sports Coordinator, works with high school athletic directors, special education teachers, and 504 Coordinators to identify eligible students.

“Students with a variety of disabilities participate in the program, emphasizing their abilities rather than their limitations,” says Phillips. The focus is on teamwork and resilience. According to Phillips, participation has led to improvements in grades, attendance, and discipline among students. Many participants have also formed lasting friendships.

One notable example is Samantha Fraser from North Gwinnett High School who competed on All-Around Champion, a reality show, in 2022. Supported by GCPS and the community, Gwinnett HEAT continues its mission to inspire more students to join.
