Gwinnett County Public Schools has named Jenna Cloninger as the 2025 Teacher of the Year. Cloninger, an oceanography teacher at Central Gwinnett High School, was recognized for her dedication to fostering student engagement and promoting a love for science. The announcement was made during a ceremony at the Gas South Convention Center on December 7.
Cloninger was chosen from a pool of six finalists and had previously been named the county's High School Teacher of the Year. Her approach emphasizes creating an inclusive classroom environment that honors student voice and choice. "I create an inclusive environment in my classroom by honoring student voice and choice," Cloninger stated. She also supports district goals through initiatives like 'S.H.I.E.L.D.,' which provides tutoring services with a positive learning atmosphere.
The selection process for Teacher of the Year began with nominations from across the district, resulting in 141 local school representatives. A committee narrowed this down to 25 semifinalists before selecting six finalists. Alongside Cloninger, Michelle Ruhl from Sugar Hill Elementary School was named Elementary School Teacher of the Year, and Michael Payen from Five Forks Middle School received Middle School Teacher of the Year honors.
Ruhl has been instrumental in promoting STEM education at Sugar Hill Elementary, launching initiatives such as a FIRST LEGO® League team. "I want my students to see themselves as part of future innovation," she explained.
Payen, who teaches music technology at Five Forks Middle School, focuses on building students' social skills and providing equal opportunities through grant-funded resources. He also started a Soccer Club to encourage community involvement among students.
The event celebrated all local Teachers of the Year and acknowledged sponsors like Peach State Federal Credit Union and Coca-Cola Bottling Company United for their support.
