Since 2008, the Gwinnett HEAT program has provided students with physical impairments an opportunity to participate as student-athletes. The initiative was established after a presentation by the American Association of Adapted Sports Programs and aims to address the lack of sports opportunities for students with physical disabilities who do not qualify for the Special Olympics or traditional sports.

The program offers three adapted sports: wheelchair handball in the fall, wheelchair basketball in the winter, and wheelchair football in the spring. Each sport features a six-game season ending with a state tournament. Mike Phillips, GCPS Adapted Sports Coordinator, works with high school athletic directors, special education teachers, and 504 Coordinators to identify eligible students.

"Students with a variety of disabilities participate in the program, emphasizing their abilities rather than their limitations," says Phillips. He notes improvements in students' grades, attendance, and discipline. Participants have also formed lasting friendships. An example is Samantha Fraser from North Gwinnett High School who competed on All-Around Champion in 2022.

Supported by GCPS and the community, Gwinnett HEAT continues to inspire. Phillips hopes to reach more potential athletes so every interested student can join this transformative team.
