A teacher from Sycamore Elementary School has been recognized for her contributions to social studies education. DeAnne Daniels, a social studies teacher at the school, has received the 2023 Gwen Hutcheson Outstanding Social Studies Educator Award at the elementary level. This award is presented by the Georgia Council for the Social Studies (GCSS) and honors educators who have made significant contributions to the field.

Daniels expressed her gratitude, stating, “It is my extreme honor to represent Gwinnett County as the recipient of the 2023 Gwen Hutcheson Outstanding Social Studies Educator Award at the elementary level.” She added that she aims to engage her students deeply so they become passionate historians, economists, geographers, and citizens.

Sycamore Elementary School Principal Kelly Scarborough praised Daniels for her dedication and ability to form lasting relationships with students. “Mrs. Daniels is a passionate teacher who works tirelessly daily to provide quality instruction,” Scarborough said. “She creates meaningful and powerful relationships with her students that last many years after they have left her classroom at Sycamore.”

The award includes a $250 cash prize and a two-year comprehensive membership to the National Council for the Social Studies. Nominees must have at least five years of experience in social studies education and be active members of GCSS for two years.

Named after Gwen Hutcheson, a former teacher and consultant in Georgia's educational system, recipients are selected based on criteria such as teaching experience, service in fostering democratic values and citizenship, and contributions to professional learning in social studies. Jeremy Nix, GCPS director of Social Studies for K-5, remarked on Daniels' achievement: “We in the Social Studies Office appreciate all that Mrs. Daniels does to support social studies instruction in GCPS, and we are thrilled that she is the recipient of the 2023 Gwen Hutcheson Outstanding Elementary Educator Award from the Georgia Council for the Social Studies.”
