Six educators from Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) have been named finalists for the 2025 Teacher of the Year (TOTY) award. The selection committee, composed of former teachers of the year, local school administrators, and central office staff, narrowed down the candidates from 141 local school TOTYs to 25 semifinalists before choosing the final six.
The finalists are Jenna Cloninger from Central Gwinnett High School, Michelle Ruhl from Sugar Hill Elementary School, Treva Coates from Osborne Middle School, Halie Rios from Paul Duke STEM High School, Heather Kane from Lovin Elementary School, and Michael J. Payen from Five Forks Middle School.
Heather Kane emphasizes her commitment to STEM education and personal growth as a computer science educator. "My philosophy is that if I am going to effectively deliver instruction to different types of learners in my room, I should earn the certifications that will empower me to do so," she stated.
Michelle Ruhl focuses on inspiring students through STEM education. She has successfully launched a FIRST LEGO® League at her school. "This pilot allowed GCPS to grow its K-3 robotics program from 100 to 500+ students in one year," she said.
Treva Coates highlights continuous professional growth as beneficial for all students. As a department chair and teacher leader, she aims to impact teachers and students positively while fostering diversity in robotics programs.
Michael J. Payen's work includes starting a Music Technology program and creating a Choral Composition Program during the pandemic. He believes in providing equal opportunities for all students by obtaining grants for necessary resources.
Jenna Cloninger advocates for an inclusive classroom environment where student voice is honored. Her initiative 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' provides tutoring services aimed at improving school culture without making it feel punitive.
Halie Rios developed the Multilingual Learner Program at Paul Duke STEM High School with a focus on equity and access. She plays an active role in supporting diverse learner needs through various leadership positions within her school.
The selection process involves interviews and visits by committee members who will assess teaching methods, philosophies, influence on colleagues' practices, and special projects initiated by each educator. The final decision will include naming an elementary, middle, high school Teacher of the Year along with a runner-up before selecting Gwinnett's overall 2025 Teacher of the Year.
Sponsors such as Peach State Federal Credit Union support this event celebrating outstanding teaching efforts within GCPS schools.
