At a recent luncheon hosted by Porter Steel, Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Commissioner Russell McMurry shared updates on the state's transportation plans for 2025. Addressing over 160 business professionals, McMurry outlined several infrastructure projects, with a focus on Gwinnett County.
Gwinnett County will experience significant developments on Georgia 316. New interchanges are planned at key intersections such as Hi-Hope Road and Fence Road. Frontage roads are being built on both sides of 316 to improve accessibility and reduce congestion. Additional interchange improvements at Cedars Road are expected to be completed by next summer.
In Buford, the widening of State Route 20 is a major project aimed at easing traffic from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to Buford Hwy/SR 13. Design work is also underway for an interchange at Thompson Mill Road to enhance regional connectivity.
GDOT's plans for 2025 include better access along I-85 and McGinnis Ferry Road, with a new half-diamond interchange proposed for smoother access. Projects like the widening of State Route 211 in Barrow and Gwinnett counties will boost connectivity, while State Route 124 will see dual right-turn lanes added to improve traffic flow toward I-85.
Commissioner McMurry noted that ongoing efforts are necessary for transportation infrastructure, with bids scheduled for several projects next year. Acknowledging rising costs, GDOT remains committed to phased project advancements to address current needs and future growth.
