The Gwinnett Chamber recently hosted an On Topic Luncheon, focusing on Georgia's film industry. Sponsored by Porter Steel, the event featured a panel of experts moderated by Lisa Anders from Explore Gwinnett and the Gwinnett Film Office. Panelists included Randy Davidson from Georgia Entertainment, Lee Thomas from the Georgia Film Office, and Scott Votaw from the Georgia Film Academy.

The discussion highlighted current challenges in the film industry, such as COVID-19 aftershocks, recent strikes by writers and labor unions, and international competition driven by favorable exchange rates. Despite these issues, the panel emphasized that Georgia remains a significant player in the film sector.

Georgia's appeal to filmmakers was discussed in detail. The state's Camera Ready program facilitates location scouting and permits for filmmakers. The Georgia Film Academy focuses on training for technical roles like grips, set designers, and lighting technicians rather than traditional Hollywood roles. With major training centers at studios like Trilith and OFS, 85% of film-set crews are sourced locally. This model has inspired similar programs in fintech, nursing, and computer science.

The panel encouraged local businesses to engage with the film industry through services like catering, construction, banking, and equipment supply. They stressed that flexibility is crucial for success in meeting the industry's fast-paced demands.

Overall, the luncheon underscored Georgia's status as both an economic force and a creative center in entertainment. With over 5 million square feet of stage space and strong local talent development, Georgia continues to be a formidable presence in the industry.

Sponsors for this event included Porter Steel, Northside Hospital, Gwinnett County Public Library Foundation, MSTiller, Northeast Georgia Health Systems, IntegriCom, and Gwinnett Daily Post.
