At a recent Gwinnett Chamber event, Anna Roach, Executive Director and CEO of the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), underscored Gwinnett County's pivotal role in the economic development of Metro Atlanta. Roach stated that Gwinnett is crucial in realizing ARC's vision for the region.
The ARC oversees regional planning in areas such as community development, natural resources, and transportation funding. It also manages essential services like aging support, homeland security, leadership development, and research and analytics. A budget of $5.2 billion is earmarked for regional projects through 2028, with Gwinnett receiving $484 million. Notable projects include widening Sugarloaf Parkway and developing the Norcross LCI Greenway.
Other initiatives highlighted include a $30 million allocation for senior services, with $4 million directed to Gwinnett; $1 million in Livable Community Grants, including a 2024 award for the Jimmy Carter Blvd. master plan; expansion of housing options; and significant water conservation achievements.
Metro Atlanta continues to grow rapidly:
- It is now home to 6.1 million residents, ranking as the sixth-largest metro area in the U.S.
- Gwinnett's population is projected to increase by 25% by 2050.
- The regional job base has exceeded 3 million.
- Gwinnett’s median income stands at $88K.
- Median home prices have risen to $410K as of January 2025.
- Job growth in Gwinnett is at 6%, surpassing the national average.
Future priorities for ARC include tackling housing affordability, expanding infrastructure, and fostering job growth. Freight and logistics remain key areas of focus.
