Concerned parents were joined by a Georgia lawmaker to object to the "politicization" of public education at a mid-June Gwinnett County Board of Education meeting.
Sen. Clint Dixon (R-Buford) said radical leftists have been attempting to force "anti-American rhetoric" known as Critical Race Theory upon students for months. Now parents and others who publicly opposed the lessons have been threatened to be "canceled," he said on Facebook.
"Instead of focusing on this garbage, maybe the BOE should implement curriculum that actually matters. Like how to write a check. How to pay a bill. How to file your taxes. It is time for our BOE to put students FIRST, ahead of their radical agendas and petty politics," Dixon said on Facebook.
District officials said they were thankful there weren't any arguments between parents and the board, the Gwinnett Daily Post reported.
The district did take precautions by having GCPS police officers and Gwinnett County Sheriff's deputies stationed in the parking lot of the J. Alvin Wilbanks Instructional Support Center where the meeting was held, the newspaper reported.
Attendees also had to go through a tent with security officials who were checking in people who had signed up to speak during public comment. There were no disruptions during the meeting, the Gwinnett Daily Post said.
