The Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners plans to keep its millage rate at the same amount as last fiscal year, which will increase taxes due to property reassessments.
Commissioners will hold the first of three public hearings at 9 a.m. on July 12 on the millage. The other two required hearings will be held on the same day, July 19, at 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. All meetings held in the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center auditorium at 75 Langley Drive, Lawrenceville, a county news release said.
“From engaging programs for our seniors, to our libraries, our roads and transit system and even how our court system runs - these are just a few services the tax revenue will pay for,” Gwinnett County Chairwoman Nicole Hendrickson said in the release.
Last year’s rate was at 6.95 mills. The rollback millage rate was calculated to be 6.853 mills. The commissioners plan to approve the millage rate at 2 p.m. July 20, the release said.
Under state law, after the total digest of taxable property is completed a rollback millage rate must be computed that would generate the same revenue for the current year as it generated for the previous year had no reassessments occurred, the Property Taxpayer's Bill of Rights said.
Commissioners also will consider millage rates for development, code enforcement, recreation, police, fire and emergency services and economic development funds. Public comment can be made online until 9 p.m. on July 19.
