Two Cherokee County School District leaders have been named finalists for the statewide title of 2022-23 Georgia Assistant Principal of the Year!
Cherokee HS Assistant Principal Elizabeth “Liz” Spell and Woodstock HS Assistant Principal Dr. Meagan Waid are two of the three leaders announced as finalists for the award presented by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals. The award, which is open to high school and middle school assistant principals statewide, recognizes “outstanding school leaders who have succeeded in providing high-quality learning opportunities for students.”
The judges will select a winner based on achievement in four categories of specific standards: personal excellence, collaborative leadership, personalization and curriculum, instruction and assessment. The winner will be announced later this school year and then represent the state in the competition for the national title.
“I’m incredibly proud to see both Liz and Meagan recognized at the state level for their exemplary service as school leaders,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “They each have demonstrated excellence in administration, especially in improving our best practices for teaching and providing curriculum and support services that meet the needs of all students. It’s impressive to see one leader honored as a finalist, but to see two truly speaks to the high quality of our leadership team. Congratulations and best wishes in the competition!”
In addition to being a vital part of Cherokee High School’s administrative and leadership team, Ms. Spell’s specific area of oversight is curriculum. She also is responsible for schedules, counselor oversight, course extension, graduation labs, remedial programs, peer tutoring, honors night and academic letters.
Ms. Spell, who was appointed assistant principal at Cherokee HS in 2018, previously served as an assistant principal at Teasley MS, a CCSD graduation coach and as a teacher and coach at Cherokee HS. She is a graduate of the Superintendent’s Leadership Academy and earned her specialist in education degree from University of West Georgia, master’s degree in education from Cumberland University and bachelor’s degree from Furman University.
Dr. Waid, in addition to her critical role as a member of Woodstock High School’s administration and leadership team, oversees curriculum. She also is responsible for the school improvement plan, schedules, student services, the language arts and social studies departments, the AP (Advanced Placement) program, the middle to high school transition, online learning opportunities, graduation ceremonies, honors and awards nights and academic letters.
Now in her fifth year as an assistant principal at Woodstock HS, Dr. Waid previously served as an assistant principal at Cherokee HS, a teacher on special assignment at Cherokee HS and a teacher and coach at Creekview HS. She is a graduate of the Superintendent’s Leadership Academy and earned her doctor of education degree from Liberty University, master’s degree in education from Georgia State University and bachelor of business administration degree from the University of Georgia.
