Gwinnett County Public Schools is highlighting the success of Jones Middle School's mentoring program as part of its reflection on National Mentoring Month. The program, initiated three years ago under the leadership of Principal Lin Thornton, aims to support students academically, socially, and emotionally.
Counselor Shena Manning and Advisor April Aviles were instrumental in implementing Thornton's vision. Initially starting with 24 girls and eight boys, the program now assists 104 girls and 55 boys from grades six through eight.
"From the beginning, our school-based mentoring program was founded on the belief that every student needs 'that one trusted adult' in our school building, someone they can turn to for support, encouragement, and guidance," Manning stated. She emphasized Principal Thornton's role as a committed advocate who fosters an environment where students feel valued. Under her leadership, the number of mentors grew from 20 to 69 across the school.
Principal Thornton noted the positive outcomes of the program: "Students report stronger school connections, improved behavior, and greater self-confidence, and mentors find the experience deeply rewarding." She highlighted Jones Middle School’s mentoring initiative as an example of effective community collaboration and expressed hope that other schools would be inspired by their success.
