Georgia Southwestern State University recently issued the following announcement.
Georgia Southwestern State University will celebrate 2022 Homecoming, themed “Alice in Wonderland,” the week of Monday, Jan. 31 – Saturday, Feb. 5. GSW alumni and the community are invited to attend select events throughout the week to show their support and Hurricane pride.
On Monday, Jan. 31, a community-wide blood drive will kick off Homecoming festivities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Storm Dome parking lot inside the big red buses. The pre-registration link can be found at www.gsw.edu/Homecoming.
Following the blood drive on Monday evening, the Student Government Association will host its annual SGA Homecoming Kick-Off to introduce the candidates for Homecoming King and Queen and the Homecoming class representatives.
On Wednesday, Feb. 2, the community is invited to cheer on the Hurricanes in the Storm Dome as they take on Clayton State University. Women’s basketball starts at 5:30 p.m. and men’s basketball start at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $5 for community members and free for GSW students and employees with a valid GSW ID. Children 12 and under also get in free.
The Florrie Chappell Gymnasium Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting will take place Thursday, Feb. 3 at 1:30 p.m. Those in attendance can enjoy refreshments and will be given the opportunity to walk through the newly renovated facility after the ceremony.
Homecoming activities will culminate in a busy Saturday, Feb. 5. The GSW Alumni Association will host their annual Rabbit Hole Dash 5K and 1-Mile Fun Run early Saturday morning, with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m. In honor of the late William Reid and his family, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Alumni Legacy Scholarship. Following the Fun Run, the Homecoming Tailgate will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Centennial Plaza behind the Storm Dome. Food will be available for purchase from food trucks, inflatables will be available for the kids, and a live band and DJ will serve as the entertainment.
If you're a GSW alum, stop by the Alumni Association tent for an armband for free admission to the basketball games and a voucher for free lunch from Surge's Street Eats food truck. Alumni can also spin the wheel for prizes and enter the drawing for a pair of tickets to the Braves vs Dodgers game on June 25th!
GSW baseball will play a double header against Eckerd College at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., with free admission to both games in celebration of Homecoming.
The women’s basketball team will take on North Georgia College at 1:30 p.m, and men’s basketball will play at 3:30 p.m. Admission to basketball games is $5 for community members and free for GSW students with a valid GSW ID. Children 12 and under also get in free. The 2022 Homecoming King and Queen will be coronated during halftime of the men’s game.
