Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has embraced the world of Esports, offering it as part of their athletic programs since 2020. This initiative allows students to engage in both virtual and in-person competitions through popular video games across 18 high schools.
"Esports include a wide variety of students who are interested in the different aspects of the gaming industry. It is also a co-ed sport which provides more opportunities for our students to become engaged with their peers, school, and community," stated Jason Holcombe, Director of Athletics.
Since its inception, GCPS's Esports program has seen considerable success with nine state championships won by six different schools. Brookwood High School recently clinched a state title for Rocket League in Spring 2024. Sean from Brookwood's team emphasized the collaborative nature of Esports: "One of the ways I prepare myself for a big match is reviewing over footage from past games, but for the entire team."
Peachtree Ridge and Seckinger High Schools also achieved state championships in Fall 2023 for League of Legends and Smash Brothers respectively.
Holcombe highlighted the benefits that Esports offer: "With Esports being completely electronic and played in an online arena, students who typically might not be interested in traditional sports can now take advantage of being a part of a team." He added that Esports represents "a multi-billion-dollar industry that can be played at the high school, college, and even professional levels."
Looking ahead, GCPS plans to provide specialized computers for Esport activities to all Georgia High School Association (GHSA) high schools within its district. Students interested in joining should check their school's website for available opportunities.
