Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is taking a proactive approach to the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) with new policies and guidance for the 2024-25 school year. These measures build on the AI-Ready pilot launched in 2019 within the Seckinger cluster, which integrates AI components into all subjects and grade levels.

The program aims to prepare students as responsible and ethical users, decision-makers, and developers of AI by emphasizing critical thinking alongside technical skills such as programming and data science. The success of this pilot has led GCPS to expand these learning opportunities district-wide.

In collaboration with partners like Digital Promise and EDSAFE AI Alliance, GCPS has updated its technology policies and introduced the GCPS Guidance for Human-Centered AI Use. This guidance stresses human oversight in AI applications, promoting inquiry, reflection, insight, and empowerment while keeping humans central to decision-making processes.

Dr. Calvin J. Watts, Superintendent of GCPS, expressed pride in the district's leadership role in establishing ethical AI guidance. "An important element of future readiness for the GCPS community is to be responsible, ethical, and critical when leveraging AI tools," Dr. Watts stated. He added that the updated policies ensure students are prepared to use AI effectively while maintaining ethical standards.

Further details about the district’s guidance on AI use can be found on their website.
