Students at Lilburn Elementary School will have the opportunity to communicate with astronauts on the International Space Station (ISS) through Amateur Radio on February 7. This event is part of the ARISS program, which aims to enhance learning in Science, Technology, Education, and Math (STEM).

The school has been preparing for this occasion by incorporating topics related to space and radio communications into their curriculum. Principal Mike Bender stated, “Our students are looking forward to this opportunity, which will give them a chance to witness STEM principles firsthand.” He added that they are proud to be among the selected schools for this unique experience.

In their STEM classes, students have explored various aspects of space missions and ISS operations. The goal is to inspire confidence in students about potential careers in space-related fields. The school organized two STEM Nights featuring activities like satellite tracking and morse code demonstrations. These events were supported by members of the North Fulton Amateur Radio League (NFARL) and the Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society (GARS).

During the event, students will directly contact Astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli from SpaceX Crew 7 aboard the ISS using amateur radio equipment. The downlink frequency for this interaction is 145.800 MHz.
