The Science of Reading is a research-based approach aimed at achieving literacy for all students by combining phonics, vocabulary, and content familiarity. This approach is supported by the Simple View of Reading, which has been validated by over 150 scientific studies. It emphasizes that reading comprehension results from the interaction between word recognition and language comprehension. If either component is weak, reading comprehension suffers.
The Reading League describes the science of reading as "a vast, interdisciplinary body of scientifically-based research about reading and issues related to reading and writing." This research spans five decades and multiple languages, providing evidence on how proficient reading develops, why some individuals struggle, and how effective teaching can improve student outcomes.
Scarborough’s Reading Rope further illustrates the complexity of learning to read. Introduced by Dr. Hollis Scarborough in 2001, it demonstrates how different skills combine to create skilled readers. The rope consists of intertwined strands representing language comprehension and word recognition, leading to fluent reading with strong comprehension.
Structured Literacy is another concept highlighted by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). It involves systematic word-identification strategies beneficial for most students, especially those with dyslexia. Structured Literacy employs methods from Science of Reading research to teach through a systematic, explicit approach aligned with Scarborough’s Reading Rope.
For families and communities, understanding the Science of Reading is crucial as educational demands evolve. The Portrait of a Graduate Core Competencies uses this research to build strong literacy skills essential for future success. The district's strategic plan emphasizes equity in education, ensuring all students receive what they need to reach their potential through research-based instruction.
Empathy and equity are strategic priorities within the district to provide high-quality instructional materials based on the Science of Reading.
