A group of concerned parents recently notified the Gwinnett County school district that it is filing a lawsuit against the district over its mask mandate.
According to FOX5 News, the parents are part of a Facebook group called Gwinnett County Parents For Quality Education. One parent told FOX5 News that masks negatively affect her children's ability to be social and have even caused mental health issues.
"Those are my children. Me and my husband, we make the decisions that are best for our children," parent Holly Terei told FOX5 News. "And if our Gwinnett County leaders have the opportunity to exercise what they feel is best for them in a very public setting, then I should have the same rights for my own children."
The Georgia Sun reports that the school district announced a mandate to require masks following guidance issued from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The mandate states that as of July 28, 2021, masks would be required for students, staff, and visitors to all Gwinnett County Public Schools’ facilities and on school buses. The mandate would apply to all individuals regardless of whether they have been vaccinated.
The CDC issued updated its mask guidance in response to rapidly increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases across the country due to the highly-contagious Delta variant.
The school district has not released a comment regarding the pending lawsuits.
