In January, the Community-Based Mentoring Program will honor its volunteer mentors for their dedication. According to MENTOR National, 74% of adults credit their success to having a meaningful mentor during their youth. This month, the program highlights three individuals making a difference in students' lives.

Dr. Taunya Lowe, CEO of Resurgent Group of Metro Atlanta, LLC, has been a mentor with the program for four years. James Rayford, Director of the Community-Based Mentoring Program, says, “Her journey began with volunteering for events and field trips, but her heart soon called her to do more.” Dr. Lowe now mentors at Crews and Sweetwater Middle Schools weekly on topics like leadership and self-confidence. Inspired by her mother, she aims to impact young girls' futures positively.

Dr. Pam Williams became a mentor after hearing inspiring stories from others. "If our community members can find time while managing their jobs and personal lives, then I can certainly give an hour of my time," she states. She praises the Office of Community-Based Mentoring for facilitating involvement in mentoring and describes her experience as "energizing."

Terry McLaurin has been a mentor for over ten years with the program. Rayford notes his lasting impression on mentees through guidance and support. Currently mentoring Dylan at Dacula High School, McLaurin helped him secure a job at Publix by preparing him for the interview and accompanying him there.

Rayford concludes by expressing gratitude: “We are deeply grateful for the contributions of Mr. McLaurin, Dr. Williams, Dr. Lowe, and other mentors who make a significant difference in the lives of students in Gwinnett County Public Schools.”
