Students in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) after-school care programs marked the 2nd annual Lights on Afterschool Awareness Day on October 24. The event was held in partnership with the district’s Office of Community Schools, which offers families opportunities for community connection and extended educational services across all cluster schools. After-school care programs are available at 75 GCPS elementary schools, serving 2,485 students from Pre-K through grade 5. These programs collaborate with organizations such as B2Anywhere, Camp Success Academy, GASP!, Right at School, and YMCA of Metro Atlanta.

The Afterschool Alliance advocates for accessible quality afterschool programs for all children. According to the organization, Lights on Afterschool is a nationwide event celebrating these programs' vital role in children's lives. Launched in October 2000, this year marks its 25th anniversary of promoting after-school activities that offer extracurricular experiences and mentoring relationships.

“After-school care programs provide safe and meaningful outlets for students and contribute to the peace of mind of our families. We are working with our cluster schools to learn how we can support and expand after-school care programs to additional elementary and middle schools,” says Director of Community Schools Soraia Santos-Felgenhauer.

For more information about local after-school care programs, contact your elementary school or visit the district's website.
