A Gwinnett County School Police Officer has been recognized for her exceptional service with the Gwinnett County District Attorney’s Office Law Enforcement Appreciation Award. Officer Bethany Lewis received the honor for her role in investigating an incident at Duluth Middle School where a firearm was found on campus.

Officer Lewis's efforts led to the safe apprehension of the individual involved, ensuring the safety of both the school and its surrounding community. Lt. David Sokol from GCPS School Police commended her actions, stating, “Officer Lewis’ thoroughness and commitment to understanding the situation fully before filing a report were crucial in identifying and removing a genuine safety threat from the school.” He further praised her follow-through and cooperation with the DA's Office, which resulted in a search warrant and additional investigation at the student's home that uncovered more concerning items.

The award was presented to Officer Lewis during an event at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Center. The recognition underscores GCPS officers' ongoing efforts to maintain secure learning environments and highlights the district’s dedication to student safety. Expressing her gratitude, Officer Lewis stated, “Every day, I strive to ensure that our students and staff feel safe and protected, and I’m deeply honored to be recognized for this work. It’s a privilege to serve GCPS and contribute to making our schools safer for everyone.”
