South Gwinnett High School students recently engaged in a unique educational experience by participating in a "Live From Surgery" kidney transplant session. This initiative, part of the school's Health and Human Service Academy, was conducted in collaboration with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and the Liberty Science Center. The event allowed students to observe a son donating a kidney to his father, who was affected by diabetes.

The program enabled students to interact with medical professionals during the procedure, offering them insights into healthcare practices, surgical teamwork, and biotechnology. Elizabeth Mayorga, a senior at South Gwinnett High School, remarked on the impact of witnessing the surgery: “Watching the kidney transplant surgery was truly life changing,” she said. “Seeing the skill and teamwork in the operating room confirmed that I must be a nurse. I can’t wait to be part of a team that saves lives every day!”

Principal Rodney Jordan highlighted how these experiences inspire students interested in healthcare careers. “Experiencing a live kidney surgery and having the opportunity to interact with the surgeons was an impactful educational experience for our students,” he stated. “It not only deepens their understanding of medical science but also inspires them to pursue careers in healthcare."

This is not South Gwinnett High's first venture into providing such learning opportunities. Last year, students from STEM Academy programs focusing on healthcare pathways observed laparoscopic surgery via video teleconference technology from New Jersey.

“At South Gwinnett High School, we are committed to providing our students cutting-edge educational opportunities," Jordan noted. "This experience embodies our school’s dedication to excellence, curiosity, and preparing students for future success.”
