Gwinnett County families with students up to 18 years old can now walk or drive through 21 Gwinnett County parks to receive free breakfast and lunch.
According to a recent report by FOX 5 Atlanta, this comes as summer break can take a toll on many families who benefit from the availability of school lunches.
"Food insecurity or food security is a big issue in Gwinnett County. There are schools in Gwinnett County that have as high as 90% in terms of students on free and reduced lunch," Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Division Director Chris Minor FOX 5 Atlanta.
This continues a trend, as FOX 5 reports Georgia’s largest school district has provided meals to students throughout the summer for years. With the need for assistance growing year by year, the local government is now stepping in to lend a hand to the school system.
According to the report, Gwinnett County is using American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA, funds to pay for the meals, which are about $4 each.
While this marks the fourth year in a row the county has done something like this, a switch to grab-and-go meal options this year makes things more convenient for those utilizing the service.
