Two students from Gwinnett County Public Schools have been chosen as delegates for the 2024 Washington Youth Tour, an initiative sponsored by Jackson Electric Membership Corporation (EMC). Alvaro Saldarriaga Arcila, a junior at McClure Health Sciences High School, and Jabez Melaku, a junior at Archer High School, are among four students selected from Georgia for this leadership development program.

Alvaro Saldarriaga Arcila is involved in various school and community activities. He is the president of the Spanish Honor Society and a former president of the Science Fair Club. His contributions include tutoring ESL students, coaching soccer, volunteering as a translator, serving on the Youth Advisory Board for Health Powers Organization, and interning at a health clinic. He is considering careers in law or engineering.

Jabez Melaku holds positions as vice president of community service for the Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) and vice president of Books for Africa. He is recognized as a scholar-athlete and participates in Model UN. Additionally, he volunteers with the Southern Gwinnett Co-op Ministry and plans to pursue a career in engineering.

The Washington Youth Tour has been offering leadership experiences to over 3,500 Georgia students since its inception in 1965. Further details can be found at jacksonemc.com/wyt.
