The International Newcomer Center (INC) serves as the initial contact point for international families arriving in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), focusing on middle and high school students. The center provides language services and support to ensure a smooth transition into the district's schools, aiming to foster high levels of learning and engagement.
International Student Advisors (ISAs) at the INC meet with students and their families to assess academic backgrounds and future interests. They evaluate proficiency in English, language arts, and mathematics, ensuring appropriate course placement and transcript analysis to keep students on track for graduation.
Students in grades 6-12 transferring from another country, whose primary language is not English, should visit the INC before registering at their local school. Families are advised to gather necessary documents and make an appointment by calling or visiting the INC located at 495 Maltbie Street in Lawrenceville. The center operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The INC offers interpretation services for meaningful communication between multilingual families and GCPS schools. To request an interpreter, families should contact their local school.
Throughout the year, the INC provides classes for newcomer families. Free English literacy classes are available weekly each semester for parents and guardians of GCPS students. Registration for these classes will be held on September 4th and 5th without requiring an appointment.
Additionally, the Newcomer Academy guides families through Gwinnett County Public Schools' processes with sessions covering School Culture, Navigating the School System, Family Resources, Community Resources, Rights, and Responsibilities. Workshops are conducted in Vietnamese, Chinese, Korean at the International Newcomer Center while Spanish workshops occur at various district schools.
For more information about these programs or other inquiries related to newcomer services in GCPS, interested parties can visit the GCPS website or contact the International Newcomer Center directly at 678-985-5200.
