Sirish Subash, a former student of Crews Middle School and an upcoming ninth grader at Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, has been named one of the ten finalists in the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
The 3M Young Scientist Challenge is recognized as the leading middle school science competition in the United States. It invites students from grades five to eight to compete for a mentorship with a 3M scientist, a $25,000 grand prize, and the title of "America’s Top Young Scientist." The competition encourages participants to identify everyday problems and propose innovative solutions.
"Sirish’s creativity and dedication to solving real-world problems through science are truly commendable," stated Crews Middle's Principal Cindy Moffett. "We are incredibly proud of his achievements and look forward to seeing his future contributions to the field of science."
This year's finalists for the 3M Young Scientist Challenge are aged between 13 and 15. They submitted videos explaining their proposed solutions' scientific basis. A panel comprising 3M scientists and educational leaders assessed these entries on creativity, scientific knowledge, and communication effectiveness. The grand prize winner will be announced in October after the final event held in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Sirish has previously received accolades for his work. Last spring, he was awarded the Agricultural Research Service Award for Excellence in Agricultural Research at the 76th Georgia Science & Engineering Fair. He was acknowledged in the Junior Division for his invention called PestiSCAND, an AI-based handheld pesticide detector.
