On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will traverse North America, affecting regions in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. This astronomical event occurs when the Moon aligns between the Sun and Earth, completely obscuring the Sun's face. The phenomenon will darken skies to resemble dawn or dusk. In Gwinnett County, observers can expect a partial eclipse from 1:45 p.m. to 4:21 p.m., with peak visibility at 3:04 p.m.

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) will maintain their regular schedule on this day. The school district is committed to ensuring a safe and educational experience for students during this event. Activities may include viewing the eclipse through solar glasses, learning safe viewing techniques using reflective surfaces, and watching live streams online. GCPS will supply solar viewing glasses to all Pre-K-12 students, teachers, and administrators for these instructional activities. Staff are advised to review safety information to facilitate secure participation.

Parents who prefer their children not participate in outdoor viewing can opt-out for elementary and middle school students by submitting forms sent via ParentSquare by March 22. Although high schools conclude before optimal viewing times, high school students and staff will still receive glasses and safety guidelines.

"We look forward to working together to make this unique event meaningful for GCPS students!"
