Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) has partnered with the EdSAFE AI Alliance to launch an AI Policy Lab aimed at promoting the safe and ethical use of artificial intelligence in education. This initiative is part of a nationwide network designed to foster responsible AI development and usage.

Dr. Calvin J. Watts, Superintendent of GCPS, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership's potential benefits for students. “In Gwinnett County Public Schools, we believe it's crucial for our students to understand the safe and ethical use of artificial intelligence as it becomes increasingly integrated into our society,” Dr. Watts stated. “Teaching responsible AI practices not only prepares our students for the future workforce, it also empowers them to be ethical stewards of technology.”

The new AI Policy Lab will offer policy recommendations and educational resources for teachers, students, and parents while working to improve policies that align with real-world applications. The lab emphasizes community engagement involving parents, guardians, and students.

Sallie Holloway, GCPS’ Director of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science, highlighted the collaboration with EdSAFE AI Alliance as a significant step forward. “This collaboration leverages our AI-Ready pilot experience and the powerful network of leaders to create policies and practices in support of responsible and ethical use of AI,” Holloway commented. “This collective will provide meaningful and practical support for stakeholders nationwide, and we look forward to the work ahead.”

The establishment of the AI Policy Lab continues GCPS' innovative efforts such as their AI-Future Ready pilot launched in 2019. GCPS is also part of the Digital Promise GenAI working group, which involves educational leaders in developing shared learning experiences related to AI policy guidance. These efforts aim to serve as a model for school systems across the country by focusing on safe, responsible, inclusive, and meaningful use of artificial intelligence.
